iCube was part of a team examining the carbon-footprint of four
buildings from the perspective of their construction and use. The
Practice was responsible for quantifying the carbon emissions from
journey to work travel at the sites which ranged from central London
offices through to a business park near Heathrow.
Data was collected and analysed to determine patterns of travel
including mode and distance travelled before typical rates of emission
per kilometre were applied to assess the average carbon release from
commuter travel.
The study revealed the significant contribution that commuting
activity had on the overall performance of a building. In addition, a
generalised function was developed to relate the commuting distance
and mode split by car to produce a measure of carbon output.
