Stanton Iron Works
iCube was appointed by the developers, Spring Development Ltd, to
contribute to the team effort of creating a new masterplan to
transform the former ironworks at Stanton, off the M1 near Ilkeston.
The Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment is currently being
undertaken by the 6 authorities which make up the Nottingham HMA which
is due to be completed end of July. It is being undertaken in 2
parts, one of which was the Sustainable Urban Extensions (SUE)
identification of suitable locations for major housing developments.
One such site was the Stanton Ironworks site. Representations were
been submitted to promote the site as a SUE with a capacity of 3500-
4500 dwellings on the basis of increased size and need to fund
essential infrastructure.
Their aim was to create a settlement of distinction, where high
quality public spaces, innovative design and construction and a
genuine mix of uses combine to attract people and investment. It was
understood that making a place where people want to live, work and
spend time - and choose to do so in a more sustainable way - is a
complex undertaking, requiring input from a wide range of
professionals and stakeholders. As a result the plan was delivered
through Design Enquiry process over 5 days to deliver a masterplan
that took account of the many perspectives on the opportunity afforded
by the scale of this project.
The result was a masterplan of two and half new neighbourhoods of
circa 4200 dwellings, plus employments and other mixed use
opportunities.
