Walton-on-the-Naze
In 2007 Turley Associates commissioned the Princes Foundation for the
Built Environment to carry out a Scoping Study for 'the Martello site'
at Walton-on-the-Naze. iCube were invited to provide urban design
support. Following this event, iCube was then independently
commission to work up a scheme for the site based on the findings of
the Scoping Study.
The regeneration opportunity to create an exemplar residential
development at the Martello Site within the walkable catchment of
Walton's town centre would increase the town's population by up to
2000. This increased all year round population will aid the
consolidation of the high street, maintaining existing services. Key
to developing the Martello site, would be the connections both to the
Mere and to the town centre, whilst utilising the Grade II Listed
tower as a focal point for both views in and out of the site.
Residential development should be influenced by the water that defines
Walton-on-the-Naze. Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) would
form the southern boundary of the site with the town, creating a
unique water feature, permeated by pedestrian and cycle bridges and
alleviating any potential flooding in an area that has been hard hit
in recent years. These SUDS would also utilise water run-off from the
Martello Tower site.
The resulting plan still to be taken forward through the Local
Development Framework process was a mixed use development of circa 450
houses which included holiday cottages to ensure retention of
facilities for the tourist industry for which the town has become
famous.
